RSS Mania – Part Four – The Basic Elements in the

Now that you are acquainted with templates, or a minimum of what an RSS Template should seem like, and some of the chances within the template, allow us to attack the “Channel” description. This article will pander to Channel Main Elements. The next article can handle Channel sub-parts more specifically the “image” element. Crtitical Point – None of those are needed EXCEPT for the command line. But it might be to your best interest to incorporate some of them.

In the previous article we have a tendency to described a channel, but it will do good to go over it again.

Look on a Channel as how you decide on to outline the data you’re going to put into the RSS file (keep in mind it is rss.xml” for our series.) As an example if you are putting out an RSS file to induce people to seem at your Net Website that has info about and sells Perfume, your channel would be: . and scan in the RSS File as:

That is pretty simple is not it? Just keep it up telling yourself that it’s all that easy. Don’t sweat the miscroscopic stuff.

Next comes the Description of your Channel. So how are we tend to going to define your Channel? Hmmm…let’s examine: “RSS Feed for The Great Perfume Products Sold At Randy’s Pandy’s Perfumery” which would love:

RSS Feed for The Great Perfume Merchandise Sold At Randy’s Pandy’s Perfumery

Hey not therefore unhealthy is it? See I told you!

Okay now the next command – Copyright. That ought to be easy. Once all we tend to are visiting unleash everything we have a tendency to write out into the Net Virtual world and we would love to mark the text with simply some sort of ownership statement. That is your copyright.

Copyright 2006 Randy Pandy’s Perfumery – All Rights Reserved

Okay next command – The “link” command> You do want to be in a position to present any viewers the power to grasp simply where to seek out these nice deals on perfume, do not you? Once all the full purpose of creating this “x####ooo&^%$#(((__” feed is to induce them to BUY from you! So the link command tells them where you’re and the way to induce to you. Allow us to say your web site is at the directory: http://www.randypandy.com Thus your link command will seem like:

http://www.randypandy.com

Okay Next is Language. Why you raise do we want a language command? Well it’s half of the RSS specifications and it is necessary for the Readers to know just what langauge you’re using. It also helps search engines understand what language this is. And anything you’ll do to be useful to Search Engines is critical. And here we have a tendency to must be careful. Most folks will be writing in English. However what happens if the RSS feed is in another language? Well the code works like this. language-code = primary-code ( “-” subcode ) Therefore if you were writing in English from the United States your code would be: en-usYou do not want the subcode. “en” would be enough. (If you would like a langauge code table try: http://www.purplepages.ie/RSS/netscape/languages.html or some 2 letter codes are: fr (French), de (German), it (Italian), nl (Dutch), el (Greek), es (Spanish), pt (Portuguese), ar (Arabic), he (Hebrew), ru (Russian), zh (Chinese), ja (Japanese), hi (Hindi), ur (Urdu), and sa (Sanskrit).

Thus our next line will read:

en-us

(Remember the “-us” is solely optional.)

Now we have a tendency to come back to the “last build date”. Once more the rationale for this is simple. To let search engines and users recognize when was the last time you updated the file. However, here too, there are some caveates. You need to follow specifications on Dates. Let us stay simple here. Every Day & Month is represented by a three letter character, as follows:
Days:

* Mon

* Tue

* Wed

* Thu

* Fri

* Sat

* Sun

Months:

* Jan

* Feb

* Mar

* Apr

* May

* Jun

* Jul

* Aug

* Sep

* Oct

* Nov

* Dec

Currently as to time, well allow us to not get complicated. We tend to will use GMT, EST, CST, MST, PST etc. Most RSS feeds can prefer to use the GMT as it’s essentially universal and can be checked on the web fairly simply. Therefore finally our date can look like this:

Sun, four Dec 2005 twenty three:00:00 GMT

Okay before we end the BASIC aspects of the Channel description allow us to simply embrace some of the opposite possiblities here (the last three are real technical so we tend to will leave them out of our feed.)

1. pubDate this is along the same syntax as our lastbuilddate and simply tells people when you publish the file. Typically used for newspapers and the prefer to flip automatically each day.

2. managingEditor – this is the email address for person responsible for content of the feed. Thus here we would put: randypandy@randypandy.com (Randy Pandy)

3. webMaster – this the email address for the person accountable for technical problems referring to channel. So here we would put: webmaster@randypandy.com (Pandy Randy)

4. class – This is used to specify one or more classes {that the} channel belongs to. So here we could place: “E-commerce”

5. generator This is A string indicating the program used to generate the channel.

6. skipHours A hint for aggregators telling them which hours they’ll skip.

7. skipDays A hint for aggregators telling them which days they can skip.

So what are we left with? Well here we tend to go (including conjointly pubdate, managing editor, webmaster & category):
